The Retirement Problem

A representative scenario about what happens when the person who knows where everything is leaves.

Representative scenario

Imagine a long-tenured operator who can guide a new teammate to the right shutoff without opening a map. They remember which drawing is outdated, where a private connection crosses the site, and which access point is easy to miss.

When that operator retires, the organization does not lose only a person. It loses a set of connections that may never have been attached to the assets or records.

The continuity response

A responsible response is not to discount experience or expect one final knowledge-dump meeting to solve everything. It is to capture field lessons as part of normal work and make them available to the next authorized person.

This scenario is representative, not a report of a named organization or incident.
